Observatory of Planetary Justice Impacts of AI

The Observatory of Planetary Justice Impacts of AI is a core initiative of the AI + Planetary Justice Alliance, designed to gather, document, and analyze real-world examples of how AI systems affect planetary justice across the entire AI supply chain.

For each documented case, the Observatory gathers the following key information to ensure a comprehensive, structured, and accessible record of AI’s real-world impacts. This standardized format allows us to trace patterns, identify key actors, and make connections across the AI supply chain while maintaining a clear focus on planetary justice.

  • AI Supply Chain Stage: Which part of the AI lifecycle does this case belong to?
(e.g., Raw Material Extraction, Materials Manufacturing, Equipment Manufacturing, Model Training, Deployment, Disposal)

  • Issue: What specific planetary justice impact does this case highlight?
(e.g., More-than-human Ecosystems, Labor Rights Violations, Displacement, Data Colonialism)

  • Affected Communities: Which human and more-than-human communities are impacted?
(e.g., fish communities, local Indigenous groups, migrant laborers, urban populations)

  • Actors: Who are the key actors involved in this case?
(e.g., Corporations, Governments, Activists, Local Communities, International Organizations)

The key information gathered will serve as an evolving foundation for future research. Rather than a static dataset, the Observatory operates as a continuous, adaptive data collection effort. As new cases emerge, the categories of collection will evolve to better capture and represent the complexities of AI’s planetary justice impacts. This dynamic approach ensures that the Observatory remains responsive to real-world developments, allowing patterns, overlooked dimensions, and new intersections to emerge over time.
